Postponement of the EUDR enforcement date

The European Commission has proposed postponing the enforcement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by 12 months. This decision responds to concerns about the readiness of markets and economic entities to comply with the regulations. Under the new timeline, large enterprises will need to comply by December 2025, while small and micro-enterprises have until June 2026 to meet the requirements.

The postponement is beneficial for businesses as it provides them with more time to adjust their processes to meet the EUDR requirements. The regulation mandates strict verification of the origin of products like soy, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and timber to prevent the import of goods linked to deforestation. A key requirement is the implementation of due diligence systems, which involve gathering information about the source of raw materials and assessing the risks of their procurement. Failure to comply with these rules may result in significant financial penalties and a ban on placing non-compliant goods on the EU market.

Additionally, the European Commission has introduced guidelines to help businesses better understand and implement the new regulations. A teleinformatics system will also be made available for companies to register the necessary due diligence declarations
